In August 2025, many of us are participating in the 30-Day Governors Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we highlight one of the 2,300+ U.S. Governors—past or present—sharing insights into their achievements, controversies, or unique aspects of their careers. For today my choice is going to be on the TALLEST US Governor.

The tallest U.S. governor on record is John White Geary, who stood at an impressive 6 feet 5½ inches (approximately 1.97 m) tall. He not only was tall but served as Governor for two states and the Postmaster for San Franscisco. Geary served as governor of both the Kansas Territory and the state of Pennsylvania in the mid-19th century—Governorship of Pennsylvania from 1867 to 1873.

Governor-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Governor in August.

  1. Record something about a particular US Governor. Make sure you include what US State and years that he/she served. Try to highlight an achievement, controversy, or some unique aspect of their career.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.

August 25-Tallest US Governor

Not only was John White Geary tall but he had some tall shoes to fill. Military Hero – He served as a Union general during the Civil War, leading troops at major battles such as Gettysburg and earning a reputation for discipline and courage.

John White Geary stepped into the Kansas Territory governorship in 1856, right in the middle of Bleeding Kansas”—a violent struggle between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers. His response to the turmoil showed both firmness and political risk-taking:

  1. Called in Federal Troops – Geary quickly realized local militias were partisan and unreliable. He relied on federal forces to restore order, often personally riding out to confront armed mobs and disperse them.
