#Surreal March 13

As humans we have rare moments in our lives where we experience the SURREAL. The last two days has sure been that for me.

It is where we feel like we are living in a dream or maybe better defined as a nightmare. The last two days have been SURREAL.

I am in a battle with my positive outlook on life with the reality that people much more knowledgeable than me know the dangers that lurk ahead.

What are those knowledgeable medical professionals and scientists saying that is making me pause.

Well for one the Federal Government is acting because they are listening to facts. I believe that should be a warning sign. They are listening to people who are recommending social distancing. That is politically painful course of action for elected officials.

Our US Government agencies are often reluctant to take any large steps, especially ones that carry political risk. So the steps the US Government is taking is giving me pause.

I wish I could say with a high degree of confidence we elect an overwhelming number of scientific and intellectual leaders. My opinion is we don’t. So when they act on scientific and health related facts it gets my attention.

The NBA, NHL, and MLB all suspending their seasons, colleges discontinuing face to face classrooms, NCAA cancelling all championships, and the US prohibiting travel into the country for 30 days from Europe is SURREAL. Yet that surrealistic picture is making me realize reality often requires us to change and adapt. Sometimes we have to change and adapt in a minute’s notice and that is unsettling.

Sometimes we have to step out of the SURREAL into reality. It is a new place for all of us. We need to remind ourselves the weirdness makes it feel SURREAL but it is actually happening.
