July 2026 several of us are going to take on theĀ 30-Day America at 250 Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share something about America’s unique and quirky history. It can be about a place, an event, or person.Ā Today it about a time in US History where the law mandated SUNDAY Mail Delivery.

In 1810 the US Congress mandated with the Post Office Act that mail be delivered and post offices opened on Sunday. To say that it was opposed by many would be an understatement.

Day 13-Sunday Mail Service

Sunday mail delivery has a long history in the United States. In the nation’s early years, the U.S. Postal Service delivered mail seven days a week because communication was considered essential to commerce and government.

During the early 1800s, many religious groups opposed Sunday mail service, arguing that it violated the Sabbath, but Congress repeatedly rejected efforts to eliminate it. By 1912, regular Sunday mail delivery had largely ended, although today the U.S. Postal Service once again delivers certain packages on Sundays through agreements with companies such as Amazon and for Priority Mail Express.
