For January 2025, several of us are taking part in the 30-Day Song Lyrics Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we utilize a theme and post the song lyrics from a song that connects the two. Today my theme is on movie soundtracks and my song is LA BAMBA.
n 1987 there was a film released called La Bamba. This movie covers the life and career of Richie Valens. He was just 17 years old when he changed the course of pop music in the late 1950s. Often Valens is identified as Mexican American or Chicano rock legend.
La Bamba, the film was written and directed by Luis Valdez. One of the many songs on the soundtrack to La Bamba was the title track called La Bamba. It is a Mexican Folk song and was made popular by Richie Valens in 1958 but in the movie, it is performed by Los Lobos.

Don McLean’ 1971 song “American Pie” has an iconic verse about “The Day the Music Died“. In two weeks on February 3rd in fact will mark the 66th Anniversary of a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa that claimed the lives of four people. Those that died included musicians Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and J.P “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Also lost in the accident was the pilot, Roger Peterson.
Los Lobos music video of the song won an award from MTV in 1988 and it also reached #1 on Billboard Top 100.
