Last night something struck me about magical moment in the history of the 2021 ACC Basketball Tournament. The league has some coaches with a vast amount of SENIORITY.

The pandemic has diminished the 2021 basketball season in a number of ways. The uncertainty of if games would be played, empty arenas, and lack of practice time all made the game different this season. Sometimes when things are going under rapid change you fail to notice or appreciate some of the historical milestones. For me seeing the ACC have five coaches who are over the age of 70 speaks volumes about SENIORITY. Not only over the age of 70 but where they rank all-time in career wins.

Jim Boeheim at Syracuse is 77, Mike Krzyzewski at Duke is 76, Leonard Hamilton at Florida State is 72, Jim Larranaga at Miami is 71, and Roy Williams at UNC is 70. I am not sure there has ever been a time in the ACC where five coaches have all been in their 70’s coaching in the league at the same time.

Here is the bracket for today’s games

So if you are person who appreciates history unfolding in the moment keep in mind that tonight you might be witnessing the golden age of coaching SENIORITY in the ACC. In fact you may be witnessing the golden age of college coaching SENIORITY.

Coach K and Boeheim have over 1,000 wins. Roy Williams has 900 plus. They rank #1, #2, and #6 all-time amongst NCAA DIV I coaches. Jim Larranaga is not one of the top 10 but he has almost 700 career wins and Leonard Hamilton is a few wins shy of 600.

Everything is cyclical and there will be a need for succession planning to replace that SENIORITY sometime in the future. Right now everyone should appreciate the historical moment the league is experiencing.
