Throughout December 2024, several of us are taking part in the 30-Day PPT Coach4aday Challenge. PPT is an acronym for People Places or Things. Each day we share our insights, thoughts, or memories about a person (living or dead), a place (we have visited or learned about) or a thing that intrigues us. Today I’m featuring a person who is being talked about a lot over the past week-SANTA.

When it comes to Santa my hometown of Morristown NJ has a connection. Thomas Nast, a 19th-century political cartoonist, is credited with popularizing the modern image of Santa Claus through his illustrations in Harper’s Weekly during the 1860s and 1870s.

He moved to Morristown in 1872 during the later years of his life. His home was called Villa Fontana and sat at 50 Maccollough Ave. As a small boy I lived on the first floor at 114 Maple Ave. in a three-family residence just 4 blocks from Nast’s house. My house on Maple Ave. is depicted below. For those with ties to Morristown it sits to the right of Doyle Funeral Home today.

People in Morristown have a strong affinity for the cartoons of Thomas Nast especially Santa. Below is Thomas Nast former home today.

People, Places, & Things 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines

  1. Each day in December 2024 write about a Person, Place or Thing-PPT
  2. Share at least one fact, memory, or quality about your subject choice.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

December 21st-Santa

People have many traditions involving Christmas and a lot of them evolve around the character Santa Claus. Movies about the jolly old elf are quite popular at this time of year.

Did you know that internet research states there are 159 movies that feature the big guy.

For many millennials the best Santa just might be Tim Allen who starred in the “Santa Clause“. For purists it often is Richard Attenborough who was Santa in the 1994 remake of “Miracle on 34th Street”

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
