In August 2025, many of us are participating in the 30-Day Governors Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we highlight one of the 2,300+ U.S. Governors—past or present—sharing insights into their achievements, controversies, or unique aspects of their careers. For today my choice is going to be on three Governors who all had the last name ROCKEFELLER.

Nelson A. Rockefeller was Govenor of NY from (1959-1973)-Winthrop Rockefeller was Governor of Arkansas from (1967-1971) and John D “Jay” Rockefeller IV was Governor of West Virginia from (1977-1985). All three of them were related to John D Rockefeller.
Governor-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

August 2-Governors Named Rockefeller
On a recent trip to Cleveland OH I learned that Standard Oil got its start in 1870 in that city.

Was very curious if the three Governors named Rockefeller were connected to John D Rockefeller and the answer is yes.
Nelson A. Rockefeller, Winthrop Rockefeller, and John D. Rockefeller IV (also known as Jay Rockefeller) were all members of the prominent Rockefeller family, descended from John D. Rockefeller Sr., the founder of Standard Oil and one of the wealthiest individuals in history. Here’s the connection between them:
- Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908–1979) andWinthrop Rockefeller (1912–1973) were brothers, both sons ofJohn D. Rockefeller Jr., and grandsons of John D. Rockefeller Sr.
- Nelson served as Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States under President Gerald Ford.
- Winthrop served as Governor of Arkansas and was the first Republican elected to that office since Reconstruction.
- John D. Rockefeller IV (Jay Rockefeller) (born 1937) is the nephew of both Nelson and Winthrop.
- He is the son of John D. Rockefeller III, the eldest of John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s five sons.
- Jay Rockefeller served as Governor of West Virginia and later as a U.S. Senator from that state.
