#Reunion February 22

A year ago today I got to participate in a REUNION with one of the basketball teams I coached. It was one of the last big events I participated in prior to the pandemic.

The REUNION was for the 1990 UNC Pembroke Basketball team (then Pembroke State) who won the 1990 Carolinas Conference Championship.

Like any group that had 30 years separate them not everyone could attend but for the ones that did it was a special day. We got to reminisce and tell stories to the best of our memories about what a fantastic team we all belonged to.

The past year has mostly been filled with cancelling or postponing events and gatherings I really enjoyed attending or hosting. Attending church, visiting breweries, pig pickings, Valentine’s Dinners, pool parties, and REUNIONS have all been casualties of the pandemic. I am thankful for Zoom, Facetime, phone calls, and notes for helping me stay connected but I have to admit I am ready for a lot of simple face to face REUNIONS.
One of the things a REUNION does is let us remember our past and especially those relationships. Our past is not a place we should affix our permanent address to. Yes I enjoy and miss REUNIONS but happiness and joy comes when I savor the present moment.
Sometimes when I embrace the present moment it is enhanced by the memory of a past REUNION and excited about ones that will occur in the future. That happened today.
