For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting PERSON County.

Person County was established in 1792 from Caswell County, and the county seat is Roxboro. After the Civil War, the newly constructed Norfolk and Western Railroad opened Person to the rest of the state and nation and its communities soon became homes to sizable and important manufacturers.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
  2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are some facts about the county.

Basketball Trivia-An interesting basketball event occurred in Person County when Person Senior High School and Hillside High played on February 3, 1977. According to the Courier-Times, Person High Rockets lost 2-0 to Hillside; only one basket was made in the entire contest.

The first shot of the game was made by Hillside’s Leon McRae, and in the remaining thirty minutes of play, not a single shot had went through the rim. The Rockets took seven shots while Hillside made one of five, and the game became the lowest scoring basketball match ever in North Carolina’s sport’s records.

However, the game did not beat the national record because in 1930 Georgetown beat Homer 1 to 0 in an Illinois state high school tournament.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
