#Pectin January 23
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
In January 2026, many of us will take part in the 30-Day Label Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will share a label from a food product and share info about one of the ingredients. The goal is simple—read food labels, research unfamiliar ingredients, and become more intentional about what you’re putting into your body, building awareness that can lead to healthier, more mindful eating. Today my post is info on PECTIN.

My wife in the early years of our marriage influenced by her mom would can peach honey when peaches were in season in North Carolina. That process required the use of pectin which came from lemon peels. Commercial pectin is available to buy at the grocery store, but it’s also found naturally in just about every fruit and vegetable. Popular brands for home use include Certo and Sure Jell.
Label-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing an ingredient from a food label during the month of January.
- Locate a label on a food product and research an ingredient you might not be familiar with. Â
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one what that ingredient is.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

While preparing my English Muffin this morning I glanced at the Grape Jelly purchased at Food Lion and noticed that pectin was listed on the food label.

The jelly in my refrigerator included commercial pectin.
You can make it at home by simmering lemon peels, which are naturally high in pectin. Chop the peels (including some of the white pith), place them in a pot, cover with water, and simmer gently for about 30–45 minutes until the liquid reduces and thickens slightly. Strain out the solids, then simmer the liquid again until it reduces by about half; once cooled, it will gel lightly and can be used as homemade pectin.
