On December 23, 1776 one of America’s great authors wrote the following words.

THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.

The author was Thomas Paine and the words come from a series of essays called The American Crisis.  Paine wrote these words during the Revolutionary War. The words above come from his first essay called The Crisis.

That first essay moved General George Washington to have it read to his troops hunkered down for the winter at Valley Forge, PA. George Washington was using Thomas Paine’s words to create a PATHWAY of hope. Today we all need to think about a personal PATHWAY to conquering our fears and concerns in regards to COVID-19.

A PATHWAY can also be described as guiding light or constitution. In the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by the late Stephen R. Covey he mentions composing a “Personal Constitution”.

It is something I have been doing since the mid 1990’s. I attempt to review and edit it twice a year. I just have begun my 2020 review and edits. The past two weeks have included many reflections on what the pandemic is teaching me.

For me my personal constitution is my PATHWAY or beacon on what is important in my life. It is also a decision making tool. The US Supreme Court often has to interpret what is and isn’t constitutional related to the law. My personal constitution is my guide on what is IMPORTANT in my life. If you don’t know events and experiences can change that perspective.
