In November 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Human Condition Coach4aday Challenge. “Human conditions” can refer to the wide range of physical, mental, emotional, and social experiences that define our lives. Each day we will spotlight or describe those experiences. I am going to use this challenge to dive into a book called “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows” written by John Koenig. It provides the readers words for feelings or human conditions we might be hard to describe.  My condition for today is MAL DE COUCOU.

In February 2025 the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard published an article on The Friendship Recession. It captured why the condition of Mal de Coucou is growing. It cites a number of growing trends including a 29% rise to solo dining. Not to play the blame game but it appears many don’t want to invest the time spent with others and default to solitude.

Human Condition-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Human Condition during the month of November.

  1. Record or Describe a Human Condition. Try, if possible, to provide an example
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

If you need help in clarifying Human Conditions here are some examples

November 20th-Mal De Coucou

I’d love to see this condition improved for many. The path to having close friends begins with choosing to be a friend yourself. We need a societal shift where people find more of their sense of significance in friendship than in work.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
