The national flag of this country is a vertical triband with a red stripe at each side and a blue stripe in the middle, with a unique symbol centering on the leftmost stripe.

  1. Previous flags: Prior to the adoption of the current flag, This country had different flag designs throughout its history. From 1940 to 1992, during the communist era, it used a flag with a red background featuring the same symbol in yellow.
  2. Historical significance: The symbol has a long history in the country’s culture and was originally created by Zanabazar, a renowned Buddhist spiritual leader and artist, in the 17th century.
  3. The Soyombo Symbol: Positioned in the upper hoist-side corner of the red stripe is a complex symbol called the Soyombo. It incorporates various elements, including fire, sun, moon, two triangles representing the male and female principles, and the Buddhist symbol of eternity.
