I don’t know why but this morning I thought of the late mayor of Pembroke, NC Milton Hunt. He had a number of nicknames including LITTLE MILTON and Mousy. He was mayor for 32 years and died at the age of 71 in 2015.

That nickname of LITTLE MILTON brought me back to a post I did in early 2018 in response to a tweet from Rodd Baxley.

Rodd was responding to a twitter comment made by a ESPN reporter and used the comeback tweet “Grits Ain’t Groceries”. I retweeted Rodd and asked him if he was a fan of the late blues musician LITTLE MILTON and his hit song “Grits Ain’t Groceries”.

He responded he didn’t know who LITTLE MILTON was. That is the problem with the America music scene a lot people don’t know about the blues.

LITTLE MILTON was in fact James Milton Campbell Jr. a versatile soul singer who became a musical spokesman for the African-American community and did not want to be typecast as a blues artist. That still didn’t stop him from being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1988. His father, also a musician, was known as “Big” Milton Campbell – which explained how his son got the “Little” nickname. He was often compared to B.B. King and Bobby “Blue” Bland.

There is a reason Rodd Baxley didn’t know about Little Milton because the Blues is a genre that is not bustling or mainstream. It takes young people to keep an older form of music alive. If you live in Robeson County NC you will be proud to know there is a very gifted blues musician amongst our midst named Lakota John Locklear who is doing all he can to keep the Blues alive. I have been blessed to have him play the guitar on my front porch for a dinner party we did in 2018..

Grits ain’t grocery
Eggs ain’t poultry
And mona lisa was a man
