During the month of July, I have taken up the 30-Day Curiosity Coach4aday Challenge, and today’s focus is on the topic of “LETTERS.”

The mechanics of this challenge involve presenting a question and subsequently uncovering the optimal response.

July 2nd Curiosity Question

What letters start the most words in the English Language?

This is a pretty selfish question because John Rancke, Dennis Stuart, and Becca Kenney Revels and I all play Wordle almost every day.

In addition to that I am often watching Wheel of Fortune every evening at 7:00 PM and attempting to solve the word problems before the contestants and most importantly my wife.

Knowing the letters with the highest frequency at the beginning of words could potentially enhance my chances of success.

July 2nd Answer

There are more English words beginning with the letter ‘s’ than with any other letter. (This is mainly because clusters such as ‘sc’, ‘sh’, ‘sp’, and ‘st’ act almost like independent letters.) Probably no surprise that ‘x’ is in last place. There are about 74992 words in the English Language that start with ‘s’.

For Wordle players there are 1559 5 letter words that begin with ‘s’. If you are playing Wordle know that S-C-B are the 3 most frequent letters used to begin a word.
