October 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Celebrity Alma Mater Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a celebrity and share where they attended college. For Day 2 it is on JOHN GLENN.

War has a way of changing the trajectory of people’s lives. That was certainly true for John Glenn.
Glenn enrolled at Muskingum College (now Muskingum University) in September 1939, where he studied engineering and starred on both the football and basketball teams. While still a college student, he also took advantage of the government’s Civilian Pilot Training Program and earned his pilot’s license in July 1941.
Then came December 7, 1941.
As Glenn walked across the Muskingum campus to attend a recital featuring his future wife, Annie Castor, he learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor. The news changed the direction of his life. Just weeks later, in January 1942, Glenn left college and joined the military.
He entered college preparing for one future. A world at war sent him down an entirely different path—one that would eventually lead him to become a Marine pilot, test pilot, astronaut, and U.S. senator.
Sometimes, the events we least expect become the turning points that define our lives.
