Came across a new word for me as I was attempting to find a synonym for growing. I found INCIPIENT.

What struck me as a former basketball coach was the definition used a basketball example to define it (see below).

When we attempt to grow our personal leadership or character it starts in an INCIPIENT stage. Changes will feel different. Growing makes us feel awkward and sometimes unsure.

INCIPIENT is a word that firefighters use. The International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) states there are 4 stages of a fire. You guessed it the first stage is called INCIPIENT.

This first stage begins when heat, oxygen and a fuel source combine and have a chemical reaction resulting in fire. For us to grow or change we need a chemical reaction also.

Dan Heath in the video below talks about that reaction and it goes as follows.

  • People See Something
  • People Feel Something
  • People Change

So if you want to take your journey from an INCIPIENT stage to something more refined you have to tap into emotion.
