Ever been surprised on how long something has been in existence? That was the case with me and the FAX machine.

It has a much longer history than I thought. In fact it was Invented back in 1843 by Alexander Bain. Many referred to it as the “Electric Printing Telegraph”. This device was issued British Patent #9745 and it was the world’s first FAXING device. Despite being around for quite some time , FAX machines did not become popular with consumers until the 1980s.

FAX machines revolutionized how people could receive and send documents. It became an alternative way of delivery and did impact the postal service.

There are three basic kinds of fax machines known as group 1, group 2, and group 3. The groups indicate how fast the machine can send information and at the same time receive information. Speed of transmission can vary from 6 minutes to 1 minute per page depending on the group.

In Japan there is still strong demand to keep these machine in many offices. Great article written on July 8, 2021 in Insider by Matthew Loh titled “Japan Can’t Get Rid of the Fax Machine”
