For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting GUILFORD County.
One of North Carolina most populated counties is Guilford. It has 550,000 residents. The county was formed in 1771 and was carved out from Orange and Rowan. The County is named after Francis North, the first Earl of Guilford. North never lived in North Carolina.
Here is a map of Guilford County highlighted in blue.
County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
- Share that fact along with where it is located with others
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are some interesting facts about Guilford County.
Guilford County is home to several universities including Guilford, Greensboro College, UNC Greensboro, NC A&T, Bennett, and High Point. I did not know that the famous journalist radio/tv broadcaster Edward R. Murrow was born in Guilford County.
Greensboro was also the site of a 1960 civil rights event at a Woolworth’s Lunch counter. Also, you will find a copy of the 1960 lunch menu at Woolworth’s that those 4 students were trying to order off of. A coke, ham sandwich, and apple pie for 55 cents. Wow prices have changed in 60 plus years.
