In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to be connected to caddies and their tool is a GREENS BOOK.

One of the most helpful tools for players and caddies alike are the detailed green-reading books.
Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.
- Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
July 29-Greens Book
Caddies use a greens book to help golfers read the slopes, contours, and speeds of the putting surface. Here’s how they use it:
- Reading Breaks: The greens book contains detailed maps of each green, often showing slope directions with arrows and color gradients. Caddies study these to advise the golfer on how a putt will break.
- Aiming Points: Using the data, caddies help the golfer pick precise aiming lines based on the pin location, green speed, and putt distance.
- Strategic Planning: Even before reaching the green, caddies reference the greens book to help position approach shots in favorable areas for putting.
