June 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Movie Scene Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share a YouTube clip from a movie and explain what is intriguing about that particular scene. It is a simple daily activity of sharing a Movie Scene.
My 1993 film today is Grumpy Old Men and the scenes I am sharing involve the GREEN HORNET. The hornet is actually a fishing pole used by ice fisherman. The rod is memorable because its handle is carved and painted to resemble a green duck or bird, with the fishing rod extending from the bird’s beak. It looks more like a folk-art creation than a piece of modern fishing equipment.

This month marks the 78th consecutive month that friends Jeff Neelon and Jaclyn Donovan have taken on some sort of challenge. For June 2026 participants simply commit to sharing one movie scene from a film. Each scene just needs to be accompanied by a simple explanation on what is happening or why it was chosen. Hope you decide to join us or enjoy the clips we share.
Day 12-The Green Hornet
Grumpy Old Men is a great film because of its story and outstanding acting. Walter Matthau plays Max Goldman, and Jack Lemmon plays John Gustafson. They are grumpy next-door neighbors who have been feuding for years in Wabasha, Minnesota.
The entire movie takes place during the winter, and ice fishing is a big part of life in the town. Max owns a special fishing pole called the Green Hornet. The pole gets lost and later returned by John, which leads to the two scenes I want to share.
There is also a romantic rivalry in the film. Both Max and John are interested in Ariel Truax, who is played by Ann-Margaret. That adds fuel to their rivalry.
Video Clip
First clip is when Max is fishing and loses the Green Hornet. He goes into depression. Can’t help but laugh on the lines that Grandpa Gustafson played by Burgess Meredith has in this scene.
Video Clip #2
The second scene begins with Max hearing a knock on his Ice Shanty door. He goes outside and sees John Gustafson dancing and finds the Green Hornet at his door.
