In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to some of the tools of GLASSBLOWING.

In September I’m going to be traveling to Corning NY for a wedding. My plans are to find time to go visit the Corning Museum of Glass. It is place where you can see all the tools that go into the art of Glassblowing.
It requires a number of tools to make a glass piece which will be described below.
Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.
- Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
July 6-Glassblowing Tools
Making a piece of glass involves time, skill, patience and a unique set of tools. That list includes:
Blowpipe – A long metal tube used to gather and blow molten glass.
· Punties (punty rods) – Solid rods used to hold and shape the glass after blowing.
· Glory Hole – A high-temperature furnace used to reheat glass while working.
· Furnace – Where the raw glass is melted at extremely high temperatures.
· Marver – A smooth steel or stone surface used to shape and cool the glass.
· Jacks – Tweezer-like tools used to shape and open the mouth of vessels.
· Shears – Used to cut hot glass; includes straight, diamond, and duckbill shears.
· Paddles – Flat wooden or graphite tools used to flatten or shape glass.
· Blocks – Water-soaked wooden tools used to form and smooth molten glass.
· Tweezers/Pick Tools – For fine detail work and manipulating hot glass.
· Bench – A special seat with rails to support the blowpipe while working.
Here is a short video describing the role of each in making glass.
