#GarbageDisposal October 19

In October 2025, many of us will be taking part in theĀ 30-Day Kitchen Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a commercial or residential kitchen. The tools and devices used to prepare and cook food is quite extensive and this month we will take a look at both the sublime and ridiculous. My post today is focused on the GARBAGE DISPOSAL.

If you live in a modern dwelling in the United States, it stands a great chance the kitchen sink has a garbage disposal.

A kitchen sink disposal, or garbage disposal, adds convenience by grinding food scraps into tiny particles that can be safely washed away through the plumbing. It helps reduce household waste and unpleasant odors by keeping food out of the trash. The units themselves can be purchased depending on quality for under $200 but they do need to be installed.

We have been fortunate that the one installed under our kitchen sink is still in use since 1999. Our looks very similar to what is shown below.

Kitchen-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a Kitchen during the month of October

  1. RecordĀ something about an item found in a Kitchen. Make sure you include a description and its purpose. Try, if possible, to include a photo.
  2. ShareĀ with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. JoinĀ the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Here are three tips for getting the most out of your unit.

Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal to help flush food particles through the pipes and prevent clogs.

Avoid grinding hard or fibrous items like bones, corn husks, or potato peels, which can dull the blades or jam the motor.

Clean regularly by grinding ice cubes and citrus peels or using baking soda and vinegar to remove buildup and keep it smelling fresh.
