Today’s Coach4aday post is on CHARACTER.

For the past few months my daily post was connected to challenge. For April I am doing a 30-Day Exercise Challenge but have decided not to blog about that each day in April. Instead, I am taking on some component of leadership.

Defining Character

People I have quizzed on how they define this attribute will tell me I can recognize it but cannot explain it. Well, I want to describe it. For me it is habits, thoughts, and motives connecting us to the settings on our moral compass.

Looking at it another way when you are faced with an ethical decision in a difficult situation your CHARACTER is on display.

Hiring and Recruiting Talent

Most of my work over the past two years has been assisting organizations and universities locate a leader. There are often two things that result in not securing the right fit. One is the organization truly does not know what they are looking for in the way of results and competencies. The second is not placing a premium on a hire’s character.

As Bill Belichick says “Talent is the floor. Character is the ceiling

We all need people in our organizations that are of high character and keep that moral compass pointed in the right direction.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
