For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with BEAR Bryant.

In the world of college football mention the nickname “Bear” and everyone knows you are referring to Paul “Bear” Bryant. How he got that nickname occurred in Fordyce Arkansas. He actually wrestled a muzzled bear when he was 13 years old.

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

July 8th-Bear Bryant

Some people may think that Coach Bryant’s legacy is due to him being associated with a houndstooth hat, but the truth lies in some of the fact listed below:

Winning Six National Championships: Bryant led the University of Alabama to six national championships (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, and 1979), cementing his legacy as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time.

Setting a Record for Most Wins: By the time of his retirement in 1982, Bryant had accumulated 323 victories, making him the winningest coach in college football history at that time.

Transforming Alabama Football: Bryant transformed the Alabama football program, turning it into a powerhouse with a consistent winning record. He coached the team to 13 Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles, fostering a culture of excellence and discipline that endured long after his tenure.

Bear Bryant is synonymous with Alabama Crimson Tide Football. There are reasons the nickname “Bear” has stood the test of time.

I was in the grocery wearing an Alabama best. Dexter Manley, the Secretary of Defense when the Redsking were good, stopped me and asked me what people in Alabama thought of Nick Saban vs Bear Bryant. I thought a minute and said, “you know Tom Hanks — a great actor, can play any role, one of the best ever. That’s Nick Saban. Bear Bryant is John Wayne.
