For May 2023 I am participating in the 30-Day BASEBALL Coach4aday Challenge. This will be the 41st consecutive monthly challenge.

Since retiring, I have developed some new hobbies, one of which is playing Fantasy Baseball. Over the past two years, I have participated in a league sponsored by ESPN, purely for fun and with no entry fees or prize money at stake. My main objective is to regain my childhood familiarity with MLB players, as recognizing players on the roster gives me a sense of satisfaction and reconnection with my youth. It’s difficult to put into words, but it’s a feeling that brings me joy.

Three things helped me learn about MLB players between the ages of 10-14.

  1. At 12 years old I owned a Stratomatic Baseball Game that featured 1964 lineups.
  2. I would spend 5 cents buying packs of Topps Baseball Cards at Shalit’s Drug Store in Morristown NJ
  3. At age 13 I used part of my money from delivering the Newark Star-Ledger and Morris County Daily Record to get a subscription to the Sporting News which was the “Bible of Baseball”

FAQ on Coach4aday Baseball Challenge

To participate in this challenge, it is quite simple. You need to learn about one of the nearly 20,000 men who have played Major League Baseball since its inception.

  1. Name the player, his position, years played, and a brief bio. If possible, provide an interesting fact.
  2. Share that info with someone or on social media with hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

When I was collecting baseball cards in the 1960’s you would get a brief bio and stats on the back of the card.

Here is one on MLB Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry.

  1. That card displays his date of birth, place of birth, as well as his complete minor and major league statistics.
  2. Perry accomplished the rare feat of winning the Cy Young Award in both leagues, first with Cleveland in 1972 (AL) and then with San Diego in 1978 (NL). Additionally, he recorded 314 career wins.
  3. Perry’s brother Jim also won the Cy Young Award in 1970 while playing for Minnesota in the AL.

If you want to play ball in the 30-Day Baseball Coach4aday Challenge just respond by stating I’m in. Excited that I already have Jeff Neelon and Jaclyn Donovan in the starting line-up for this challenge.
