For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Ar.

Ar is the symbol for Argon.

Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

September 21st-Ar

Here are three facts about Argon

Third Most Abundant Gas in the Atmosphere: Argon is the third most abundant gas in the Earth’s atmosphere, making up about 0.93% by volume. It is the most common noble gas on Earth, primarily produced as a byproduct of the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen.

Chemically Inert: As a noble gas, argon is chemically inert, meaning it doesn’t readily react with other elements or compounds. This property makes it ideal for use in environments where chemical reactions need to be minimized, such as in welding, where argon is used as a shielding gas to prevent the metal from reacting with oxygen or moisture in the air.

Used in Lighting: Argon is commonly used in lighting, particularly in incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs. In incandescent bulbs, argon helps prevent the tungsten filament from oxidizing at high temperatures, thereby extending the life of the bulb. It’s also used in some types of neon signs, producing a blue or purple glow when electrically excited.
