In August 2025, many of us are participating in the 30-Day Governors Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we highlight one of the 2,300+ U.S. Governors—past or present—sharing insights into their achievements, controversies, or unique aspects of their careers. For today my choice is going to be on a Governor named ANGUS.

No other living or previous Governor shared the first name Angus, but the 56th Governor of North Carolina did. His name was Angus Wilton McLean, and he was from Lumberton, NC. I had the opportunity to meet both his son and daughter, who lived in the same neighborhood as I did.

Governor-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Governor in August.

  1. Record something about a particular US Governor. Make sure you include what US State and years that he/she served. Try to highlight an achievement, controversy, or some unique aspect of their career.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

August 23-Angus McLean

As Governor of North Carolina from 1925 to 1929, Angus Wilton McLean is remembered as one of the state’s most effective leaders. His key accomplishments include:

  • Financial Reform: He introduced modern budgetary practices, creating the Executive Budget Act of 1925, which established North Carolina’s first balanced state budget system. This brought fiscal stability and helped the state earn a reputation for sound financial management.
  • Debt Reduction: McLean significantly reduced the state’s debt and built up a budget surplus, leaving North Carolina on much firmer financial ground than when he took office.

He had three children Angus Wilton, Jr., Hector and Margaret French. Hector lived for a good portion of his life on Elm Street in Lumberton. His sister married Scott Shepard and built a house on the corner of Barker and 19th not far from her brother’s home.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
