March 2026 marks the 75th consecutive month that Jeff Neelon, Jaclyn Donovan, and I have completed a 30-Day Coach4aday Challenge. For this milestone month, we’ve chosen to focus on teaching. Each day for 30 days, we will share one lesson, principle, or insight gained from the previous 74 challenges—calling it the 30-Day Coach4aday Teach It Challenge. For each of us we believe that our own personal growth increases when we share it.
One of the impactful books I have read is the 1993 novel called The Alchemist. There are a number of characters in this story including Santiago a shepherd boy and the Alchemist. In the book the Alchemist serves up some great advice to Santiago about his destiny. This book was part of the April 2024 30-Day Conversation Coach4aday Challenge

An alchemist is traditionally defined as someone who can transform base metals into gold or silver. Today, however, that kind of transformation is only possible at the atomic level. For most people, the idea of alchemy now represents a spiritual or personal transformation that someone experiences in life.
“Teach It” 30 Day Challenge Guidelines
In past challenges, we invited others to join us, though participation has been limited. This month, the three of us will return to January 2020—the very beginning—and move forward to the present, reflecting along the way and sharing a life lesson or insight from any month with one another.
Here is how we will do it.
- Identify the principle, insight, or lesson from a previous 30-Day Challenge-identify the Challenge also.
- Teach that lesson to each of us.
- Share the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
Day 29-The Alchemist and finding our Destiny
In the novel there is a conversation between Santiago the Shepherd Boy and The Alchemist.
Santiago’s journey—and his encounters with the Alchemist—offer meaningful insights into how we can navigate our own paths in pursuit of a personal destiny.
He sets out in search of that unique purpose and ultimately meets the mysterious Alchemist in the Al-Fayoum Oasis.
Here is the context of the conversation highlighted in yellow he shares with Santiago:
To achieve your destiny, you need to understand the following. From an early age, individuals discover their purpose in life, and fear often stands as a significant barrier hindering them from realizing their destinies.
Don’t let fear take away your destiny.
