On Sunday Super Bowl LVI will be played. The broadcast will feature lots of ADS.

With regular TV audiences of over 100 million viewers, the game is once again, guaranteed to generate a huge amount of attention. That volume of viewers determines the value that TV Networks can charge for ADS. For us laypeople the cost of advertising on television is based on “Cost Per Thousand” (CPT). CPT refers to how many viewers a broadcast will reach. The upfront CPT for cable TV was $19.50 in the 2019-2020 season, while national broadcast TV advertising was just over $36. Not surprisingly, one of the priciest TV shows to advertise on is the Super Bowl.

History of Advertising with the Super Bowl

The evolution of advertising with the game has been prolific. In Super Bowl I the cost of a 30 Second TV Ad was $42,000. For Super Bowl LVI you need to dish out 6.5 million for a 30 Second AD. When you watch the game on Sunday keep that in mind.

There is a YouTube video that really gives a great history of TV Ad and the Super Bowl. The advertising world really changes in 1984 when Apple introduced their ad. One interesting fact is the first Super Bowl was broadcast on two networks NBC and CBS. It was the only time that happened.
