October 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Celebrity Alma Mater Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a celebrity and share where they attended college. For Day 16 it is on DAVID SEDARIS.

This month, I’m discovering that many celebrities, particularly those in the entertainment industry, didn’t follow the traditional path to a college degree. Some never finished college, while others took more than four years or attended multiple institutions before graduating.

David Sedaris is an example. He will appear at Western Carolina University on October 29, 2026, for an event titled An Evening with David Sedaris. After graduating from Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, Sedaris attended Western Carolina University for a year before transferring to Kent State University. He eventually earned his degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago approximately ten years after beginning his college journey.

He is an author and humorist and in 2001, he was awarded the Thurber Prize for American Humor and named Humorist of the Year by Time magazine. He has also earned three Grammy nominations for audio versions of his works, and in 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Binghamton University in New York.

I became aware of him on the CBS Sunday Morning TV Show.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
