In September 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Monuments Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight one of the nearly 50,000 National Monuments or Memorials across the United States. In addition, we’ll feature a wide range of other tributes—from statues honoring heroes and athletes to memorials recognizing outstanding citizens and many other categories. Today the post is on the oldest monument in Boston Public Garden named THE ETHER MONUMENT.

This Ether Monument was erected in 1868 and was dedicated to Ether being used in anesthesia. It went under extensive renovations in 2006 thanks to donations many from the Anesthesia Community. When ether was first used to dull pain is a topic that historian’s debate but in Massachusetts a milestone took place.
The first public demonstration of ether anesthesia was conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1846 by Boston dentist William Thomas Green Morton and Doctor John Collins Warren. Morton administered the ether, and Warren then removed a tumor from an unconscious patient.Â

September 14-Ether
When Ether was introduced in 1846 it greatly increased the number of surgeries being performed. There became a tradeoff with an increase in surgical infections. That opened the door for the work of Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister to create antiseptics.
