In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to be a tool called a THEODOLITE.

A theodolite is a precision instrument used by surveyors to measure horizontal and vertical angles with great accuracy. It is essential for mapping, construction layout, and determining land boundaries in engineering and surveying projects.
Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.
- Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
July 13-Theodolite
The theodolite has its origins in the 16th century, with the first known use of the term appearing in Leonard Digges’ writings around 1571. Early theodolites were simple sighting instruments with a compass and protractor used for measuring horizontal angles. Over time, they evolved significantly—especially in the 18th and 19th centuries—with the introduction of telescopic sights, leveling mechanisms, and vernier scales, improving both accuracy and functionality.
Another tool used by surveyors is a Total Station.
