In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to be a COMPASS.

One of the dangers of technology is that it can diminish knowledge or thinking skills. Every day our phones provide us with automation that takes the thinking out of tasks years ago that was critical. One example is the built-in app on most iPhones called Compass.

This feature utilizes the phone’s built-in sensors to provide real-time orientation information, helping users determine the direction they are facing relative to the Earth’s magnetic north.

Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.

  1. Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

July 3-Compass

I am often amazed how many young people cannot determine cardinal direction they are headed in. Yes, an app on your phone can assist but there are other ways. If you know where the sun comes up in the morning and face in that direction you will be looking east, north is to your left and south to your right with west at your back.

Features of Compass iPhone App

See the latitude and longitude of your current location.

• Check your elevation above sea level on iPhone 6 (or later) models. I often use this on commercial airplane flights to determine our elevation.

• Tap the screen to lock in the current heading, then watch for a red band to see if you’re on course.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
