This February 2025, several of us are participating in the 30-Day Philosophy Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we choose a quote or concept from a philosopher, past or present, and share it with others. Participating in this activity is actually sharing wisdom with others. My philosopher choice today is WILLIAM JAMES.

For many the subject of philosophy can seem abstract without a connection to the day-to-day realities of life. William James made philosophy feel less like theory and more like a guide for navigating life’s uncertainties. His pragmatic approach to truth argued that ideas should be judged by their practical consequences, shaping modern thought in psychology, religion, and education. He also authored a 1200-page book in 1890 titled The Principles of Psychology that many consider a masterpiece.

Philosophy 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines

  1. Identify your choice of philosopher, and, if necessary, offer up a brief bio on that individual.
  2. If you need help here is a link to some famous philosophers
  3. Provide the quote or concept that is attributed to this philosopher.
  4. If sharing with others use the #Coach4adayChallenge

February 5th Philosopher–William James

William James studied at both Harvard’s Lawrence Scientific School and it’s School of Medicine. In fact, James received his M.D Degree in 1869 but never practiced medicine.

Quote or Concept

William James has had many quotes attributed to him. Here is a link to some of them.

There are so many quotes or concepts that William James has it was difficult to pick just one. He was a believer in attitude. He stressed the importance of friendships. His thoughts also centered on the importance of small daily acts in achieving bigger results. In the end I choose the quote below that addressed that concept.

We forget that every good that is worth possessing must be paid for in strokes of daily effort. We postpone and postpone until those smiling possibilities are dead… By neglecting the necessary concrete labor, by sparing ourselves the little daily tax, we are positively digging the graves of our higher possibilities.” –William James

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
