For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am profiling the Seattle MARINERS.

Every franchise in the MLB has been to a World Series except the Seattle Mariners. The team has been in existence since 1977. The closest they came was in 2022 when they won a Wild Card Series over the Toronto Blue Jays.

World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
  2. Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

October 11th-Seattle Mariners

Despite never making it to a World Series here are three interesting facts about the Seattle Mariners:

  1. The Mariners’ First Playoff Appearance Took 18 Years – The Mariners were established in 1977, but they didn’t reach the playoffs until 1995. That season, they won the AL West and made a dramatic playoff run, highlighted by their legendary comeback win against the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series, famously capped by Edgar Martinez’s series-winning double.
  2. Ichiro Suzuki’s Record-Breaking Season – In 2004, Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki set the Major League record for most hits in a single season, with 262 hits, surpassing George Sisler’s 84-year-old record of 257. Ichiro is widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters and outfielders in MLB history.
  3. The 2001 Mariners Hold the Record for Most Wins in a Regular Season – The Mariners won 116 games in the 2001 regular season, tying the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most wins in a single season in Major League Baseball history. Despite their incredible regular season success, they were eliminated in the ALCS by the New York Yankees.
