For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am profiling two players who each played in five World Series and each time they were RUNNER-UP.

Fred Merkle and Terry Pendleton have something in common. They each played in five World Series but never won. They are the two players who apparently have the most runner-up appearances without a championship ring.

World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
  2. Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are some facts about Fred Merkle

Played in Multiple World Series: Fred Merkle played in a total of five World Series during his career, three with the New York Giants (1911, 1912, 1913), one with the Brooklyn Robins (1916) and later with the Chicago Cubs (1918). Despite his efforts, Merkle never won a championship, as his teams lost in each of those series.

Key Player in 1912 World Series: In the 1912 World Series, Fred Merkle played a pivotal role in Game 8 (the series went to an eighth game due to a tie in Game 2). His single in the 10th inning helped set up a potential game-winning opportunity for the Giants, but they ultimately lost to the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic finish.

Here are some facts about Terry Pendleton

Terry – lost with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985 (7 games) and 1987 (3), and three times with the Atlanta Braves in 1991 (7 games), 1992 (6), and 1996 (6). Ironically the Braves won the World Series in 1995, but Pendelton had been traded to the Florida Marlins for the 1995 season. He returned in 1996.

1991 World Series Performance: Terry Pendleton played a pivotal role in helping the Atlanta Braves reach the 1991 World Series after an outstanding regular season in which he won the National League MVP award. Pendleton hit .367 during the seven-game series against the Minnesota Twins, but despite his strong performance, the Braves lost the series in a thrilling Game 7.

1992 World Series Return: Pendleton returned to the World Series with the Braves in 1992. Although the Braves lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games, Pendleton continued to be a key contributor, providing leadership both at the plate and in the field. He batted .296 during the series.
