For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen B.

B is the symbol for Boron.

30-Day Elements Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Boron.

Vital for Plant Growth: Boron is an essential micronutrient for plants, playing a critical role in cell wall formation, nutrient transport, and the development of seeds and fruits. Although required in small amounts, a deficiency in boron can lead to poor growth and reduced crop yields.

Used in Borosilicate Glass: Boron is a key component in borosilicate glass, which is highly resistant to thermal shock and chemical corrosion. This type of glass is commonly used in laboratory equipment, kitchenware (like Pyrex), and even in the production of smartphone screens due to its durability.

Neutron Absorber in Nuclear Reactors: Boron is used in the control rods of nuclear reactors due to its ability to absorb neutrons. By absorbing excess neutrons, boron helps regulate the nuclear fission process, preventing the reactor from overheating and maintaining a stable reaction rate.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
