For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Na.

Na is the symbol for Sodium.

Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Sodium

Essential Electrolyte in the Body: Sodium is a vital electrolyte that plays a key role in maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction. It helps regulate blood pressure and volume. Sodium is most commonly consumed in the form of sodium chloride (table salt).

Highly Reactive Alkali Metal: Sodium is a highly reactive metal, especially with water. When it comes into contact with water, it reacts violently, producing sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, which can ignite due to the heat of the reaction. Because of this reactivity, sodium is typically stored in oil to prevent it from reacting with moisture in the air.

Abundant in Nature: Sodium is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. It is found in large quantities in oceans as part of dissolved salt (NaCl), which makes up about 3.5% of seawater. Sodium compounds are also present in various minerals, including halite (rock salt).
