For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with the most successful female pirate in history named CHING SHIH.

Zheng Yi Sao was from China and was the most successful female pirate in history. She was called Ching Shih. Her Red Fleet was to have numbered 1800 ships and 80,000 sailors both men and women.

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

July 25th-Ching Shih

Three interesting facts about Ching Shih.

Commanded a Massive Fleet: Ching Shih, originally a Chinese prostitute who married a powerful pirate, became one of the most successful and feared pirates in history.

Strict Code of Laws: Ching Shih enforced a strict code of laws to maintain discipline and order within her fleet. These laws included severe punishments for theft, desertion, and disobedience, ensuring that her pirates remained loyal and efficient.

Successful Retirement: Unlike many pirates who met violent ends, Ching Shih negotiated a favorable surrender with the Qing Dynasty government in 1810. She secured amnesty for herself and her crew, kept her loot, and retired as a wealthy and respected member of society, later running a gambling house.
