Today for the 30-Day Movie Coach4aday Challenge the film chosen is “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“.

The prompt for today was to select your favorite book to film adaptation. Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel by the same name centered on patients in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, is brilliant and has sold 8 million copies since being published.

The Movie-“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

If you haven’t seen this 1975 film, you need to do it. This movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

The basic plot of the novel and film is a about a rebel. In the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse. That veteran is R.P. McMurphy played by Jack Nicholson.

The cast is fantastic and includes the late Lousie Fletcher as Nurse Ratchet and Danny DiVito as Martini.

Psychiatry treatment and how we deal with Mental Illness in this country came under scrutiny after this film was released.
