November 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a ‘Saying or Expression” and explore what its origins are. For Day 5 we explore the expression “WRITING ON THE WALL”

Many of the expressions we use every day have fascinating histories, cultural connections, and lessons that remain relevant today. The goal of this challenge is to explore those.

With the 2026 mid-term elections finished I do recall many pundits stating that certain candidates should pay attention the “Writing on the Wall“. Simply put it is an idiom that suggests a portent of doom or misfortune is on the way.

30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge Guidelines

This challenge is not just limited to idioms but can include familiar sayings, expressions, clichés, proverbs, and colloquialisms.

How it works

  1. Share an expression, idiom, cliches, familiar sayings or even a colloquialism.
  2. Attempt to explain its origin and/or meaning
  3. Share it with others using the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 5-Writing on the Wall

The phrase originates in the Bible, Daniel 5: which tells a story of a banquet held for thousands when a giant hand writes its condemnation of a blasphemous king on a wall.
