#Whistle July 22

In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to be on the WHISTLE. It is used by a myriad of different professions.

When my wife met me in 1980, I was working as a college basketball coach. I’m fairly certain her family had a stereotypical image of coaches—someone who wore a whistle around his neck all day. Ironically, on the day our oldest child was born, I got word during an August basketball clinic to get to the hospital right away—and I showed up still wearing my whistle. As a wedding gift, she gave me a 4-inch glass globe with a golden whistle hanging on a hook, a thoughtful and humorous nod to that perception.

Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.

  1. Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

July 22-Whistle

Sometimes a blog post can remind you just how universal an object can be. That was the case today with my research on the professions that have the whistle as a key component of them doing their job. Look below for ten occupations that utilize a whistle. It may be a post for another day but there is a wide variety of different types of whistles just in the world of officiating.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
