For the month of August, I am participating in the 30-Day Phone Apps Coach4adayChallenge. Today the focus is on travel navigation app called WAZE.

The goal each day is to explore a different application each month that I could use or experiment with on my iPhone or desktop.

August 20-Waze-Travel Navigation

Waze is a popular navigation app that utilizes real-time crowd-sourced data to provide accurate traffic and navigation information to users. It offers features like turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates, and alerts about accidents, road closures, and police presence. Waze stands out for its community-driven approach, where users can contribute data about road conditions and incidents, making it a valuable tool for navigating through traffic.

How does Waze work?

Waze operates by combining GPS data from users’ smartphones with information provided by its community of users. When a user inputs a destination, the app calculates a route based on real-time traffic conditions, road closures, accidents, and other incidents reported by other users.

Waze’s algorithms analyze the data from various users to determine the speed and flow of traffic on different roads. It then adjusts routes in real-time to provide the quickest and most efficient path to the destination, considering both the distance and the current traffic conditions.

Features and settings

Many users don’t know that Waze has different voice settings to respond in a variety of accents.

If interested here are the steps

  1. Open Waze App: Launch the Waze app on your smartphone.
  2. Go to Settings: Tap on the search (magnifying glass) icon or the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom-left or top-left corner of the screen to open the main menu.
  3. Access Settings: Scroll down the menu and find the “Settings” option. Tap on it to access the settings menu.
  4. Select Voice & Sound: In the settings menu, you should see an option labeled “Voice & sound” or something similar. Tap on this option to access the voice settings.
  5. Choose Voice: Inside the “Voice & sound” settings, you will likely find a section where you can change the voice guidance. Look for an option like “Voice directions” or “Voice guidance” and tap on it. Currently I have mine set to 1970’s DJ. When you come to a round-about his take on directions is hilarious.
  6. Select Voice: Depending on the version of the app and your location, you might have various voice options to choose from. You could find different accents, languages, and possibly even celebrity voices. Select the voice you prefer.
  7. Save Changes: After selecting the desired voice, make sure to save your changes. There might be a “Save” or “Apply” button at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Exit Settings: Once you’ve made your selection and saved the changes, you can exit the settings menu by pressing the back or home button on your device.
