In October 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Kitchen Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight an appliance, utensil, or gadget found in a commercial or residential kitchen. The tools and devices used to prepare and cook food is quite extensive and this month we will take a look at both the sublime and ridiculous. My post today is focused on the WAFFLE IRON

When I am traveling and the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast, I often survey the offerings to see if they have a waffle iron. A kitchen waffle iron consists of two hinged metal plates that press together to cook batter into waffles. Each plate has a patterned grid that creates the waffle’s signature shape and texture. When traveling to a particular hotel in Texas it is shaped like the Longhorn State. Despite having a White Westinghouse at home, it is rarely used because of the degree of difficulty to clean.

October 9-Waffle Iron
Surprised in researching details for this post the appliance or device has been with us for a while. The waffle iron dates back to the 14th century in Europe, where blacksmiths crafted heavy metal plates with engraved designs that were held over open fires. In the United States, the first patented waffle iron was created in 1869 by Cornelius Swartwout, making home waffle-making more convenient. By the early 20th century, the introduction of electric waffle irons transformed the breakfast staple into a quick and easy kitchen favorite.
