For October 2023, I am participating in the “30-Day 30 Words Coach4aday Challenge” where the topic today is UNDERSTAND.

October 8th Topic

The past week has been a whirlwind for me. My semi-retired life calendar has included committee meetings, board meetings, interactions with a new client, and finalizing a number of future presentations. In each of these tasks there were moments when I was at a loss to understand some component of what I was involved with.

Having my time involved with a variety of events often presents a communication dilemma.
Sometimes I just do not know what to do next because it is not clearly stipulated to me.

Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein offered up some sage advice when he said, ‘To understand is to know what to do.’

Statistics might be hard to find but I don’t believe people make mistakes when they understand what they are supposed to do. It is the converse those errors come from blind spots and a lack of understanding.

30 Words or Less on the ability to Understand

I don’t know what I don’t know“.

This is a phrase I frequently employ when collaborating with others. While it may initially come across as risky or make you seem vulnerable, I believe it conveys the opposite message: “I possess substantial knowledge, but I’m not all knowing.”

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
