This February 2025, several of us are participating in the 30-Day Philosophy Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we choose a quote or concept from a philosopher, past or present, and share it with others. Participating in this activity is actually sharing wisdom with others. My philosopher choice today is HENRY DAVID THOREAU.

It was refreshing to select Henry David Thoreau because high school and college lit classes had exposed me to his books. Two most notable are Walden and Civil Disobedience. He gets labeled as an essayist, but he was to many a practical philosopher.

Thoreau at age 20 became a graduate of Harvard University in 1837. For a Harvard man in the 1830’s there were four dominant career paths the ministry, law, medicine, or teaching. He chose teaching but that only lasted two weeks. After that he went to work for his dad in the family-owned pencil factory. Eventually he and his older brother John Thoreau started their own school.

Philosophy 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines

  1. Identify your choice of philosopher, and, if necessary, offer up a brief bio on that individual.
  2. If you need help here is a link to some famous philosophers
  3. Provide the quote or concept that is attributed to this philosopher.
  4. If sharing with others use the #Coach4adayChallenge

February 11th Philosopher–Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau overarching philosophical views can be classified as transcendentalism. Other important transcendentalists included Ralph Waldo Emerson who Thoreau considered his mentor.

Like the other philosophers I found much to read about them on the Goodreads website and lots of great thoughts from Thoreau. My chosen quote for today is found below.

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” Henry David Thoreau

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
