In May 2025, many of us have decided to participate in the 30-Day Golf Coach4aday Challenge. Each day the goal is to share something about a particular golf course, golf equipment, or to actually get on the course and play a few holes. Golf is the only sport where you can be furious, humbled, and ecstatic—all in the span of one hole, and still call it “relaxing.” It’s a game where you are cajoling and chasing a tiny ball into a gopher hole. For many it becomes a lifelong obsession and an excuse to buy outrageous pants and the latest driver.

Today my golf observation is on the first 18-hole golf course I ever played SPRINGBROOK.

This challenge will not be for everybody but there are plenty that enjoy the game despite not being anywhere close to playing at a high level. That includes me.

Golf 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to getting out on the golf course—but if that’s not in the cards, share a story about a favorite course or a piece of gear you love (or love to hate).

  1. Record something about your day on the course or talk about a golf course or piece of equipment.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 17-Springbrook

One of the first paying jobs I had was caddying in the summers at Springbrook Country Club after completing 7th and 8th grade. Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, New Jersey, was founded in 1921 and features an 18-hole championship golf course originally designed by golf legend Walter J. Travis. It was a private club and back in the 1960’s members walked the course using a caddy to carry the bag.

It was a job that required you to sit down in a place called the “Caddy Shack” and wait on the “Caddy Master” to select you. There was many a day I never got a bag. I was slim, underweight, and was not high on the pecking list but sometimes persistence paid off and I would get a bag or two.

On Mondays at Springbrook the course was closed to members, but caddies could play for free. I would take my hickory shaft clubs gifted to me by Uncle Jack Bourke and play 18 holes. I can still envision every hole on that course including the three consecutive Par 3 on #9#10-#11. Springbrook has five par 3 on the course.

The closest I ever came to a hole-in-one was on #10 when the pond was frozen in front of the green. My shot was short but bounced up on the green and stopped two inches from the hole.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
