For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the SPHENOID.

During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Identify one anatomical part of the body.
  2. Describe what its purpose is.
  3. Describe where it is located.

Identify Your Choice

The sphenoid bone, constituting one of the eight cranial bones, derives its name from the Greek language, where it signifies “Butterfly.” If you go to this link you can see a great image of what it looks like.

Purpose

It plays a crucial role in shaping both the foundational and side structures of the skull, working in tandem with the orbital floor. The numerous connections it establishes with other bones contribute to the overall stability of the skull. Additionally, it serves as a point of attachment for several muscles involved in chewing.

Location

The sphenoid bone is situated at the base of the skull, near the middle of the skull base.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
