In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to one of the tools used by a Physicist called a SPECTROMETER.

When you occupation involves studying the interaction between matter and energy it is going to require some sophisticated tools. For a physicist one of those is the Spectrometer.
Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.
- Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
July 14-Spectrometer
There are several types of spectrometers, each designed for specific applications and ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum. Mass spectrometers analyze ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio, commonly used in chemistry and biomedicine. Optical spectrometers, such as UV-Vis, infrared (IR), and X-ray spectrometers, measure how light interacts with matter, while nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers explore the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei to reveal molecular structures.
Here is a video on how they work.
